Master Sales, Never Go Hungry

I’ve had a lot of random jobs over the years. But the one that I have benefitted the most from was door to door sales. From the first day when I interviewed, got in this random guy’s car who had just moved to Georgia from England, and we visited a neighborhood in the suburbs of Atlanta.

I watched him walk confidently up to doors and charm the pants of people. I wished I had his damn accent. He reminded me of my college roommate, and Aussie guy named Lachlan. These are the kind of guys who can charm the pants off of well…anyone.

That being said, I had no idea that people were even still door knocking, but I knew that I damn sure needed to sell something, and fast. Because I didn’t have any other job prospects (with my resume as an online college student and cruise ship musician).

From Zig Ziglar to Napoleon Hill, personal development writers always inspired me, but I felt something was missing. I knew who they were truly speaking to were salespeople. At the time, I didn’t think of myself as one. And now, I realize we all are.

We’re all selling, all the time. Sales is influence, and influence is leadership (as defined by John Maxwell in 21 Immutable Laws of Leadership).

Sales is any communication you have with another human being. You have to engage with people, understand their needs, and provide them with some value. Otherwise, they won’t want to hang around you and you’ll be broke, lonely, and miserable.

If you have friends, you “won” them according to Dale Carnegie, right? You had to sell them on 1) that you’re not a creeper 2) that you are fun to hang out with 3) that you have similar interests 4) that they would derive some enjoyment, entertainment, or other value from spending time with you.

Same with a partner, same with a family member, honestly.

So, learn to sell. I mentioned several authors here. Or you can follow me on Medium and schedule a call with me here: www.eightytwentyagency.com

Stay Blessed.
